The highly anticipated demonstration of the Playstation VR system was a huge letdown after Sony's Richard Marks showed off the system at the PlayStation Experience fan event in San Francisco. Gamers were not so thrilled after the demo began showing faults.

While most demos of VR games have been a single-player experience, Sony's demo game is for two persons and it highlighted the device's weaknesess. While it showed that two people could occupy the same virtual space and throw disks at each other, the overall result is not much to be desired. Users were shown to be having a hard time controlling their virtual hands and the players' movements looked awkward while they navigated inside the VR world. It's like they demonstrated how the software and hardware aren't ready yet for public release.
Scheduled to be released in spring of 2016, the PlayStation VR is Sony's entry in the virtual reality industry. The technology is expected to balloon into a $30 billion business by 2020. Fans have been eagerly awaiting for a product that will bring full immersion into the gaming world.
Sony's PlayStation VR is set to compete with the Oculus Rift, which is from Facebook's Oculus VR division, as well as the HTC Vive for PC, which is based on Steam VR technology from Vive. The race for a convincing VR experience is still open as developers are yet to show a fully immersive, usable prototype.
Rival Microsoft, on the other hand, is deviating a little from the usual route. While it also has an alliance with Oculus VR for a game controller, the Xbox manufacturer doesn't have a VR entry yet of its own. It has its own product, the augmented-reality glasses, dubbed HoloLens. For some critics, the Hololens looks more impressive than most VR technology being developed when it was first demonstrated.
