Driving while distracted is dangerous, but how about "text walking"? A new paper published by Science Daily News about distracted walking based on a study by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) reveals that more than three quarters or 78 percent of U.S. adults believe that distracted walking is a real and serious issue. On the other hand, 74 percent of Americans say other people are the ones who usually walk while distracted by their devices. Only 29 percent admit the same about themselves.

Many Americans opt to operate their phones while walking because they are apparently confident in their multitasking abilities. When asked why they walk while distracted, 48 percent of the respondents said they just don't think about it, 28 percent feel they can both walk and do other things, and 22 percent are wants to use their time productively because of busy schedules.

"Today, the dangers of 'digital deadwalk' are increasingly and caused more pedestrians to fall down stairs, trip over curbs, bump into other walkers, or stepp into traffic causing a rising number of injuries from scrapes and bruises to sprains and fractures," said Alan Hilibrand, a spokesman for the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, who released the study. "Many of us simply need to force ourselves to set down our devices and focus on what's in front of and around us."

According to Science World Report, the study results shows that more residents of New York City confessed to partaking in distracted walking behaviours compared to those in other major cities, including Chicago, Houston, Los Angeles and Phoenix. Based on the study, about 86 percent of the New Yorkers interviewed admitted that distracted walking is a serious issue.

The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons encourages pedestrians to avoid musculoskeletal and other injuries by staying attentive of their surroundings. This will ensure safe arrival at your destination during this holiday season and throughout the year.
