PlayStation fans are disappointed after Sony announced this weekend at a PlayStation fan event in San Francisco that only selected PS2 titles will be coming to PS4. This is completely contrary to what many people had expected.

Fans were also disappointed for the reason that they need to pay to play the games that they already own, rather than simply re-using their old physical copies, which is meaningless to the word 'backwards compatibility' to disc based games.
Meaning, Sony's backward compatibility feature is not literally for free. Instead of allowing gamers to use their old PS2 library of games in the PlayStation 4, users will need to pay for the new versions of the game via PlayStation Store. Even if the users already own the game on disc, still they are obliged to pay if they want to experience PS2 game on PS4 console.
Meanwhile, Microsoft Xbox 360 backward compatibility games are also limited in number, but Xbox One users do not have to pay for them again. Since the original Xbox 360 physical discs can be used directly in the console.
According to Forbes, this move by Sony is callous, because of the depth and breadth of the PS2 games library. Literally, the system can easily emulate PS2 games via software, but to not add that feature on the PlayStation 4 is frustrating to customers.
In addition, there was an argument that the hardware based backwards compatibility option is more costly than the software based one. After the PlayStation 3 launched, the same concern regarding PS2 backward compatibility was raised by fans after Sony cut-off the PS2 support on the subsequent version of the system. This time, the issue was brought again following the release of the PS4.
Sony is already remaking a large number of classic games to prop up the still quite generic PS4 game library But according to fans, what Sony needs to do is change its backward compatibility feature.
