ISIS Weapons Came From China, Russia, US, EU: Amnesty International

ISIS Weapons Came From China, Russia, US, EU--Amnesty International

(Photo : Reuters) Amnesty International released a report revealing that the islamic militant weapons used to terrorize and attack civilians were manufactured internationally, specifically by China, US, Russia and EU states.

The stockpile of weaponry being used by Islamic militants to kill, terrorize, and attack hapless civilians worldwide actually came from more than 25 countries including China, Russia, US, and the European Union states, a report released by the Amnesty International said.

The report released on Wednesday blamed the West for the decades-old reckless arms trading that has enabled the Islamic militants to commit war crimes against Iraq and Syria and fueled their atrocities.

In the report, "Taking Stock: The arming of Islamic State," Amnesty revealed that the terror group has managed to acquire a huge arsenal of deadly weapons because of the lax controls and unregulated arms trade that have been in place for decades.

Taking Stock also revealed that widespread corruption in the Iraqi military has given the terror group unprecedented access to firepower, which they use in their terror attacks.

The Amnesty report included videos and images of how these arms and weaponry  have fallen into the Islamic militant's hands.

Based on the videos, the terror group looted the Iraqi arsenal with powerful arms and weaponry which were manufactured and designed in dozens of countries including China, Russia, and EU states.

Other weapons have been acquired during battle, through illicit trade as well as through defection of fighters across Syria and Iraq.

"Poor regulation and lack of oversight of the immense arms flows into Iraq going back decades have given ISIS and other armed groups a bonanza of unprecedented access to firepower," Patrick Wilcken, researcher on arms control at Amnesty International said.

According to Amnesty, the Islamic militants had a windfall of internationally manufactured arms and military equipment, mostly made in the US and China, when they looted Iraq's stockpile after taking control of Mosul in 2014.

The report stated that advanced weaponry and military vehicles, all made in the United States, were used by the ISIS to take control of territories across Syria, displacing the locals and leaving them without homes.

The Taking Stock report said ISIS not only had access to guns but also to some high-powered and modern military materiel.

Among the more advanced weaponry ISIS have access to are the man-portable air defence systems (MANPADS), armoured vehicles, and guided anti-tank missiles.

Amnesty said ISIS' weaponry stockpile includes handguns, pistols, machine guns and anti-tank weapons, mortars and artillery dating back from the 70s to 90s. Assault rifles were mostly from Russian and Chinese manufacturers.
