The result of the survey conducted among 150 participants, who habitually sleep with their pets, showed that these individuals feel more secure and safe. The conclusion was gathered from patients who consulted the Center for Sleep Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, Arizona.
According to the experts, 41 percent of pet owners experienced better sleep with pets on their bed because they feel more relaxed and secured. A married woman in the study described her two small dogs 'bed warmers.' Another 50-year-old respondent said that she found it soothing to have her cat sleep on her chest. Patients claimed that they intentionally acquired a pet to help them relax.
Additionally, 20 percent said that their sleep was interrupted by the animals. A patient complained that her parrot woke her up early every day by squawking loudly at 6 a.m.
Dr. Lois Krahn, a psychiatrist and co-author of the study said: "Many pet owners view companion animals as family members that they wish to incorporate into as many aspects of their life as possible."
However, this might not be true for everyone. Around 10 percent of those who attended the clinic's sleep center in 2013 reported that their pets were to blame about their sleeping issues.
''The study determined that while the majority of patients did not view their pets intolerably disturbing their sleep, a higher percentage of patients experienced irritation, Dr. Lois Krahn said. 'This may be related to the larger number of households with multiple pets," she added.
