Twitter Tests Ordering Timeline Tweets by Relevance

Twitter Testing by Relevance Ordering Timeline Tweets

(Photo : Getty Images) Twitter’s user growth in the present quarter slowed down and stock has fallen about 32% this year through the close on Monday.

Twitter again is updating their service to look more appealing to the new comers. The company is trying to organize the timeline tweets by its relevance instead of the normal reverse chronological order.

According to Twitter, the update only affects only a small percentage of users, making the micro blogging website to be more similar to Facebook. With this update, the general orders of posts are set by relevance and according to users' interests.

However, several dedicated Twitter users do not like the changes. According to users, the reverse timeline is a fixture that should not be changed.

Twitter explained that the move is just an experiment. The company stated that they are continuing to explore many ways to surface the best content for people using Twitter.

Jack Dorsey, former co-founder of Twitter and presently interim CEO of the company, said that Twitter users must expect many bold changes to the service soon.

"You will see us continue to question our reverse chronological timeline, and all the work it takes to build one by finding and following accounts. Our goal is to show more meaningful Tweets and conversations faster, whether that's logged in or out of Twitter," said Dorsey during a conference call in July.

Meanwhile, Twitter is updating other feature such as "While You Were Away," which shows users interesting 140-character tweets they may have missed while they were off the service. And also "Moments," a tab Twitter launched in October in which editors hand-curate tweets on a range of topics from serious to entertaining.

The company is struggling to draw new users to their service, despite its recent product changes. Twitter's user growth in the present quarter slowed down and its stock has fallen about 32% this year through the close on Monday. Over the three months ending Sept. 30, the total monthly active users, including those accessing Twitter via feature phones, grew 11% to 320 million, from 316 million in the previous quarter, missing forecasts.
