Twitter Broadcasts "Favorites," Angers Users

Twitter's definition of "favorites" isn't going down well with tweeters in the tweeterverse.

In a recent experiment, Twitter decided to broadcast the "favorites" of followers to other users as if they were retweets.

Using the retweeting option in Twitter, a user can re-post another person's tweet, allowing him to broadcast the post to his followers.  Retweeting is a user's way of sharing information with their followers or showing appreciation for a certain post.

Users anger at Twitter stems from the fact that Twitter's user of "favorites" seems to be arbitrary and is seen by some as inappropriate.

Others deem Twitter's strategy as intruding into their privacy. Others see the new usage of the feature as mere nuisance.

One user tweeted, "@twitter so you're showing what people favorite on my timeline now? Isn't that what a RT is for?"

Another wrote, "Twitter filling my feed with stuff I didn't ask for -- stuff other people follow and fav."

So far, Twitter hasn't responded to users that have questioned the way "favorites" is being used. Neither is Twitter giving clues as to why they even did the experiment in the first place.

Twitter, however, said in a recent blog post it isn't uncommon for them to be doing experiments regularly that may entail working on features that will never be released to everyone on Twitter.

"It's rare for a day to go by when we're not releasing at least one experiment. So what does this mean for you? You may see some features that your friend doesn't see, or vice versa. This is all in service of making Twitter the best it can be. We appreciate your help in doing that, so thank you," the message stated.
