Oh My Girl was scheduled to make an appearance at the Unforgettable Gala, an awards show that pays homage to Asian-Americans in the media. The eveent is set to be held in Beverly Hills, California.
The pop group was forced to return to South Korea after being detained and questioned for almost 15 hours, according to a representative in VW Entertainment, the group's management agency.
The group tried to travel to United States under the Visa Waiver Program, allowing South Korean citizens to stay in the country up to three months without a visa, according to LA Times.
Oh My Girl consists of eight female members, ranging from ages 16-21.
The pop group brought along a huge amount costumes and props needed for their stage performance, which incited the authorities to suspect that they may be 'sex workers'.
A representative revealed that there was also a problem that involved visa entry, but noted that they did not need to have performance visas since their appearance was at a 'promotional event'.
An official of the United States Customs and Border Patrol stated that the pop group was denied entry to the country because they lied about their sole purpose of visiting the country.
The official added that 'Oh My Girl' presented themselves as a group of tourists rather than for work. This became evident when the contents of their baggage were inspected and the props were found.
The official also clarified the rumors of the group's '15-hour detention' and explained that they were put on the first flight back to South Korea on the same airline. As stipulated by policy, they need to send back travelers at least 15 hours later.
VW Entertainment has already sought legal consultation in the United States regarding the group's long detention.
