Rumors are out that the Boston Celtics could make a long-shot offer to the Memphis Grizzlies for center Marc Gasol if the team's bid for Sacramento Kings franchise player DeMarcus Cousins becomes unfruitful.

A lot of speculations regarding the Grizzlies are saying that Memphis is ready to "blow up" as their trademark "Grit & Grind" persona is said to be slowly being changed by team officials because it is no longer working in today's NBA style of play, as per SB Nation's Grizzly Bear Blues.

One indication of their new direction is the benching of Zach Randolph and Tony Allen, two players who have personified the Grizz's playing style, in favor of Matt Barnes and Courtney Lee to comprise a faster and smaller lineup anchored on Mike Conley.

Allen is even linked to the Lakers in a potential swap with Nick Young late last month, but no official word is out with regards to the speculation.

In line with the rumored Grizzlies blow up, Kevin O'Connor of SB Nation's Celtics Blog listed three possible alternatives for Boston to take if in case the Cousins deal fails. One of them is trading for Spanish stalwart Gasol.

O'Connor noted that there are four key factors to make a trade for a superstar like Gasol to succeed during midseason and they are: 1.) the team should not be a title contender, 2.) the franchise is on a reset, 3.) the initiator should have real interest, and 4.) the best offer should be proposed.

While midseason mega-trades are extremely rare, there is no harm for the Celtics to try and talk with the Grizzlies at this point in the season.

O'Connor said that because things in Memphis are just not working out for the franchise, the Grizzlies ownership and management could opt "to scrap what they have now for a monstrous trade package", which could include splitting their current Big Three of Gasol, Randolph, and Conley.

Gasol is said to be the perfect fit for a young team like the Celtics. At 30 years old, he is still in his prime to produce worthwhile numbers and experienced enough to lead younger players to perform at their best.
