Google has updated its Google Play Books app with automatic night light adjustment feature. The updated app with 3.7.45 build was made available for download starting Dec. 5.
Wth the update, Google finally has a solution for Google Play Books readers who had expressed frustration at being torn between wanting to read more from their e-book, or putting their device down because the light hurts their eyes for being too bright or insufficient.

The updated Play Books features a night light functionality. With this feature readers do not need to squint from the bright light or keep on readjusting the brightness on their device's screen because the app will automatically do the adjusting for them.
The news on the updated version of Google Play Books was announced by Greg Hartrell, Google Play Books Senior Product Manager, on the official Google blog last Dec. 15. He said the update to the Google Play Books app is available for both Android and iOS users.
"Night Light automatically adapts to the amount of natural sunlight outside based on the time of day, giving you just the right temperature and brightness," says Hartrell on the blog post.
Google came up with the idea of filtering out the blue light emitted by electronic devices as studies have proven that it is the major reason why people have difficulty getting a good night rest. With the updated app, when users turn their night light on, the app will automatically filter the blue light gradually and replace it with the warmer amber tone.
Since it has been proven that blue light affects the production of melatonin (the chemical responsible for signaling that it is time to rest), Google decided to make the Play Books changes to enable users to enjoy reading and still get a restful sleep.
