Electronics manufacturer Sharp, based in Osaka, Japan, has partnered with telecommunications and Internet provider SoftBank to manufacture two low-cost Aquos Crystal smartphones to be launched in Japan and, possibly, the United States.
Both devices would be have an almost bezel-less design and would have the new App Pass service, which lets the user download unlimited apps for a monthly fee, according to PC Mag.

The Aquos Crystal would be sporting a 5-inch screen with 1,280-by-720 pixel resolution, a 1.2GHz Snapdragon 400 processor, 1.5 gigabytes of random access memory and 8GB of internal storage. The phone would be running on Android 4.4.2 KitKat and a 2,040mAh battery that reportedly has a three-day lifespan before requiring external power, according to Phandroid.
The other smartphone, the Crystal X, is equipped with a 5.5-inch screen with 1,920-by-1080 resolution, a Snapdragon 801 processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32 gigabytes of built-in storage. It would run on Android 4.4.4 KitKat on its 2,610mAh battery. The phone, which would be only released in Japan, will come in red, black or white when it gets launched sometime in December.
Meanwhile, the Aquos Crystal is set to be offered by SoftBank on Aug. 29 in Japan, ahead of the device's launch in the United States through Sprint, which SoftBank mostly owns with majority of its stakes. Spring is set to hold an event in New York City on Aug. 19, which may possibly include the release date announcement for the smartphone.
Marcelo Claure, the new chief executive officer of Sprint, is also anticipated to announce new and aggressive pricing packages at the event.
"We're going to change our plans to make sure they are simple and attractive and make sure every customer in America thinks twice about signing up to a competitor," Claure said during a Sprint town hall meeting, according to LightReading.
