China is set to invite members of the Syrian government and opposition members to Beijing for talks aimed at ending the civil war in the country. The initiative is due to the apparent lack of progess from the current talks. China's Foreign Minister Wang Yi addressed the Chinese media after attending the Third Foreign Ministers' meeting of the International Syria Support Group in New York last week.

Wang said the meeting was rushed and failed in some of the important preparations. Since the meeting was held, China has urged all parties to focus on the political settlement process.
He said that China's position on the Syrian issue is clear and firm:
First, China advocates a political settlement where both parties can benefit.
Second, China insists that the Syrian people can secure their own future.
Third, China is pushing to have the UN play an active role as the main channel in mediation between both sides in the conflict.
Wang called for the UN Security Council to authorize arrangements of cease-fire and deployment of peacekeeping operations in the area.
"The only thing that guarantees a disinterested stance from China is for it to make sure that it adheres to the UN agreement with a peaceful aim. So far, it's proactive foreign policy is still trying to not intervene," Wang said, pointing out that China has no private interests in Syria or the whole Middle East.
