Virtual Classroom Booms Amid Red Alert Status in China

After Beijing issued two red alert status this month, classes have been suspended because of the hazardous pollution brought by the environment. In lieu of this, online platforms are being utilized to keep students from learning.
This has admittedly been a major concern especially among graduating students. However, Jingshan School's head Man Na assured that as long as students have internet connection, they will not be left behind. "To help the students keep to their schedule, teachers have worked out detailed plans, and have put them online," she said.

Online K12 homework service 17zuoye.com has welcomed over 3000 new teachers and 160,000 students this month. A similar app called "Homework Box," which almost has the same use as 17zuoye.com, reached new high figures in the number of test exercises students have downloaded and practiced on.
On the other hand, TAL Education Group, another K12 tutoring service, that offers free courses amid red alert, had over 20,000 new students. The company revealed that the top searched subjects were math and physics.
Also, head of government-sponsored platforms Zhan Weihu claimed that they have also provided comprehensive study and review materials online. This materials cover between primary to high school lessons and have 12-thousand class periods when added.
On a positive regard, the municipal education of Beijing Li Yi actually thinks this could benefit the students as they get to hold compiled resources materials supplied by various schools and teachers.
E-learning Research Institute Lyu Senlin said that schools and instructors should start reconsidering that online teaching and virtual classrooms should no longer be just supplementary materials.
Experts believe that over 90 percent viewed and used the online lessons during the status. After the red alert is lifted, over 700,000 schools in both primary and middle schools will return to classes.
