China's anti-poverty drive has lifted more than 700 million Chinese citizens out of poverty since 1978. This achievement makes up more than 70 percent of global reduction in poverty during that period.
China was the first developing country to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goal of poverty reduction before 2015. While this target has already been achieved, the country aims to continue the drive for the next five years.
The government plans to create a 'moderately prosperous society' that no Chinese citizen will be left behind. Its 'bottom line target' is to pull up more than 70 million people above the poverty line and maintain medium high growth by 2020.
One contributing factor to China's declining population of people living in poverty is its economic expansion of more than 9 percent every year since 1978. A predicted medium high-level growth in the years 2016-2020 will continue to support this goal.
Aside from its growing economy, the country has effective strategies to eradicate the root of poverty as well.
There is an archive that provides sufficient information on each 70 million Chinese rural residents still living on the poverty line. This is used to aid in modifying each measure according to an individual's demographic data.
The Chinese government has emphasized that its full commitment to alleviate poverty in the country aided with financial and policy support, according to recent announcement during the Central Economic Work Conference.
A fundamental part of this poverty reduction plan is the improvement of the educational system.
Since each region will have its own discrepancy in terms of economy and culture, the government has also campaigned for private companies and other organizations to play a part in the reduction of poverty in the country.
