"Google for Kids" Is On Its Way

Google is currently working on creating kid-friendly versions of its services, which include YouTube and Gmail.

The services the tech company provides are geared toward individuals aged 13 or older. In order to create an account with Google, inputting a user's Birthdate determines whether he or she meets the age requirements.

When the user's age is not within the limit required, the user will be directed to a page that explains Google's policy. The user will then be directed to the Federal Trade Commission's page on child privacy.

With the new child-friendly version of Google's services, parents will be able to control how their kids use Google's services, including how they behave on the web. According to the Wall Street Journal, YouTube is currently undergoing development that aims at increasing parental control over the videos made available to children.

The Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) prevents Google from collecting, storing and using a child's data without the consent of the child's parents. For this reason Google was forced to limit its services to an older age group. However, with the promise of kid-friendly versions of its services, rules might just change.

If a user lies about his age on Google, the website is liable. But a number of parents want to create accounts for their young children, while at the same time comply with COPPA, Google was prompted to create a predictably welcomed compromise.

Aside from compromising, Google is creating the kid-centric versions because the company wants to break into the education industry. And with a suite of services created specifically for children, educational apps and a revitalization of Chromebooks (Google's low-cost laptops) are more likely to follow.

However, some are not too pleased with the possibility of more kids creating accounts on Google.

Jeff Chester, executive director for the Center for Digital Democracy, shared that he believes the new kid-centric services will prove to be threats to the privacy of children.
