China came out firing from the start and Chinese forward Yu Dabao began to attack in the 4th minute. The forward took a Sun Xiang feed from the left wing and rolled it in from just inside the arc. China earned a point first.
In the 10th minute, there was another threatening attack from China. The ball was swung into the box and there was a player free to head across goal. Australian defender McGowan thrashed it away for a corner.
In the 30th minute, Australia's Goodwin won a free kick on the edge of the area. Aaron Mooy chose to drive it straight at the keeper, who punched clear. Mooy then got the ball back again and nearly picked Juric out in the box. Then Mooy drove the ball from out of 30 yards, and it swerved past the Chinese goalkeeper to tie the score.
In the 56th minutes, Sun Ke gifted China another goal to lead the score 2-1 on a rebound after Birighitti stopped Yu Dabao's close-range shot from near the penalty spot.
In the dramatic final minutes, China's Yang Xu's goal in the 86th minute and Wu Lei's goal in the very next minute seemingly put the game out of reach.
Though Australia's Adam Taggart scored in the 89th minute, and Mitchell Duke's goal made the final score 3-4 before the whistle, Australia still lost the match.
