In the afternoon that day, Myanmar Vice President U Nyan Tun and China's Ambassador to Myanmar Yang Houlan launched the operation button together in the gas-delivering ceremony held in Mandalay. The audience burst into applause and cheers.
In March 2009, China and Myanmar signed an agreement to build a natural gas pipeline, and in June 2009 the two countries signed an agreement to build a crude oil pipeline. The Myanmar section of the gas pipeline was completed on June 12, 2013.And the oil pipeline is expected to be finished in September, 2013.
The pipeline, starting from Myanmar's Kuaykphyu, passes through Rakhine state, Magway and Mandalay regions and Shan state and enters Chinese territory at Ruili in southwest Yunnan Province. The oil pipeline will have a capacity of 12 million tonnes of crude oil per year. It will diversify China's crude oil imports routes from the Middle East and Africa, and avoid traffic through the Strait of Malacca. Oil storage tanks will be built on an island near the port of Kyaukphyu. For oil processing China will build refineries in Chongqing, Sichuan and Yunnan.
Jiang Changliang, a person in charge of the project, said in the gas-delivering ceremony that the areas through which the pipeline went were very complicated under both geological conditions and natural conditions. It brought severe tests to the construction teams. Since the inauguration ceremony marking the start of construction was held on June 2010 in Myanmar, many constructers from China, Myanmar and India overcame various difficulties to make sure the pipeline could go into production by May 30th, 2013.
