China's capital city is intensifying its effort to improve safety hazard precautions. The Chinese government aims to eliminate hazardous and pollution-causing industries by getting rid of and prohibiting some industrial activities.
Beijing municipal work safety watchdog has announced that it is coming up with a list of potential production activities to be restricted, taking into consideration bulk pharmaceutical chemicals like ink and plastic films. Furthermore, it aims to raise safety standards by encouraging factories to upgrade, and failure to comply could attract sanctions.

So far, the watchdog has already mandated more than 900 establishments to shut down, while about 7,800 have been suspended and asked to improve. The firms were mainly assessed on fire, construction, chemical and firework safety including dust-producing corporations. Beijing will use 125 million yuan (USD 19.25 million) to control possible safety hazards and realign gasoline, gas and chemical pipelines.
Last year, China published Draft Regulations on the implementation of the country's Work Safety Law. Under the new law, companies are given specific rules to follow to avoid work-related safety accidents.
The new legislation mandates each company to appoint a person in-charge of reporting about work safety conditions during shareholders' gathering and employees' meetings representative yearly. The company is obligated to accept the person's findings. The law also requires the company to establish in-house rules for detecting and eradicating possible risks that might end up causing accidents. Industries with sensitive production materials like oil or gas storage tanks, are subject to special rules specified in the Drafts Regulations. Furthermore, preserving work safety liability insurance is also promoted under the Work Safety Law.
