Two police officers were wounded after shots were fired during an encounter with the culprits, according to police officer Sean Howard of Chicago city's police department.
According to Harvey Mayor Eric Kellogg, one of the wounded officers received a scratch to his arm after gunshots were fired and was immediately treated on scene while the other officer, Darnell Keel, was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center because of a gunshot wound in the elbow.
Both officers are already in stable condition.
Meanwhile, a one-year-old boy was released from the hostage scene at around 11 p.m. Tuesday as negotiations were still in progress.
The child, who was immediately taken to a nearby hospital for observation, was the fourth hostage freed during the incident, though it is not clear how he got out of the house.
According to police reports, three other children, who were freed beforehand, had been held hostage inside the home along with four adults.
It is still unclear whether the hostage-takers and the hostages are related. Reports indicate that one female hostage is still inside.
According to reports, a negotiator is in constant communication with the armed hostage-taker via a window in the suburban Chicago home.
Authorities have blocked the streets near the area and residents nearby are advised to stay indoors as the incident progresses.
Some 100 residents along the block have been temporarily relocated while a group of 45 employees in a nearby school who were preparing for the upcoming school sessions have been escorted to safety.
SWAT officers wearing body armor have arrived via an armored car. So far, no fatalities have been reported.
