The suspect's father, William Ray Brimhall, 58, had been shot multiple times, according to Coos County District Attorney Paul Frasier. Authorities found the body of the victim, who was frim Dillard, Oregon, near his car parked at a secluded logging road in the Coast Range. The area is reported to be approximately 50 miles from Bastendorff Beach, where another body was found fatally shot due to the drive-by shooting.
The gunman, Zachary Brimhall, 34, was said to have lured his own father to the remote site on Monday. According to his mother, Zachary called the victim in their house to ask for help. He claimed that his car broke down at the isolated Coos County campsite and needed assistance. The victim then left to meet his son, but both men did not come home afterwards. "No question the son is responsible," Frasier stated.
Investigators disclosed that the older Brimhall was shot upon arriving at the secluded campsite. His estimated time of death was around the evening of Monday. Preliminary investigations lead authorities to believe that the younger Brimhall went to the beach after the incident. Several hours after his arrival, he began shooting at cars in the parking lot. The estimated time the suspect started the shooting was 1 a.m. on Tuesday. At this hour, the first 911 reports were received from frightened callers in the area.
Authorities revealed that the gunman was the one who shot and killed David Jesse Hortman, 43, who was from Walker, Michigan. Hortman was said to have been sleeping inside his vehicle at the time of the shooting. Police said that Hortman was a representative of a vehicle supply company. He decided to have a weeklong vacation following the trade show exhibit he attended. No other person was injured by the incident.
Investigators have yet to find out the reason for the gunman's violent acts. Frasier shared that they still have no idea on the motive of the killings. "We're hoping to be able to find out. We may not," he admitted.
According to Frasier, several firearms, large firecrackers, and other materials suspected to be parts of a bomb were found inside the vehicle of Zachary. The Oregon State Police bomb squad identified and confirmed that these materials were the same as those used for an improvised explosive device. To date, no connection has been established between Hortman and Zachary Brimhall.
