Customers of the Chinese liquor company, Nine Springs Ecological Agriculture Development Co., got more than they bargained for with drinks laced with Viagra and Revatio in their bottles.  The alcoholic spirits were marketed as being "nutritional and healthy liquor."

Sildenafil citrate, the active ingredient in erectyle dysfuntion drugs such as Viagra, are also used to treat  pulmonary arterial hypertension.  It relaxes the body and increases bloodflow to certain body areas.  It also carries serious risks and side effects, which is why it is only prescribed to patients above 18, and must not be mixed with certain other drugs.

Anyone who consumed the viagra-spiked liquor and also took nitroglycerine medications, runs the risk of death without medical intervention.

The Chinese liquor-maker who was identified only by his last name, Huang, has been arrested.  He not only illegally included sildenafil citrate in his spirits, but also failed to indicate the presence of the drug on the labels of his drinks.

Huang allegedly bought 1 kilogram of sildenafil citrate over the internet in January.  He spiked his products with 130 milligrams of Sildenafil citrate to 100 millilitres of alcohol and produced 750 liters.

The drinks were sold at 60 yuan ($9.70) per bottle to consumers.  Huang also gave away 800 bottles of the spirit to his friends and kept 30 bottles for himself.

Huang said he added the drug in order to boost his liquor sales and make easy, fast money.  Although he knew that Chinese law does not allow sildenafil citrate to be added into liquor, he believed that a small dosage of the drug in his drinks would not pose any danger or side effects to consumers.

The liquor has yet to be recalled from consumers and the police have not yet seized the remaining unsold bottles from the factory in Jianshi County in Hubei.
