Because performing during halftime at the Super Bowl is every musician's dream and is considered as one of the biggest musical platforms in the world, the NFL wants performers to pay for the privilege of appearing during the event.
According to a report published on the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday, performers for next year's Super Bowl halftime have been narrowed down to three acts - Coldplay, Rihanna and Katy Perry.

The association also said to the representatives of each act that they are obliging the artists to give a percentage of their earnings in tours following the Super Bowl. If the musicians don't agree to the said deal, they can make a "financial contribution" for a chance to perform during halftime.
If the allegation of artists being charged is true, this is the first time the football association has made such a demand.
Representatives for the artists allegedly gave the NFL a "chilly" response, especially since musicians perform during halftime for free.
In the past, the NFL did not pay its halftime performers; however, the association covered the performers' expenses, which included travel and production costs.
Spokeswoman Joanna Hunter indirectly debunked allegations that NFL is charging musicians to perform during halftime. She shared that the contracts the NFL has with its performers are confidential and, both parties only want to "put on the best possible show".
Hunter stated that performers for next year's game, which is set to be held in Glendale, Arizona, have not been chosen yet.
This year's Super Bowl viewership averaged at 112.2 million viewers. Singer Bruno Mars and the Red Hot Chili Peppers' halftime performances broke records at 115.3 million viewers. Commercial time during this year's event was valued at $4 million per 30-second spot.
Super Bowl 50 will air live next year on Sunday, Feb. 7 on NBC.
