“Mojin: The Lost Legend” Continues to Dominate the Box Office

Mojin: The Lost Legend continues to dominate China's box office. In fact, the film has already broken the record for the highest earning local language IMAX film in China, trumping Monster Hunt as China's top box office player.

Mojin already grossed over $27.1 million in IMAX's China theaters, compared with $27.0 million for Monster Hunt, which hit IMAX screens last summer. It's cumulative gross has already reached over $245 million.

The Chinese action adventure thriller starring Chen Kun, Huang Bo, and Shu Qi, is the movie adaptation of the novel the novel Ghost Blows Out the Light.

The movie is set in 1990s, when renowned tomb explorer Hu Bayi embarked on his retirement in Manhattan with his fiancée Shirley Yang. Before his wedding with Yang, however, Bayi finds out that Ding Sitian, his first love, who he thought had died 20 years ago, is still alive. Bayi is lured to return to return to tomb searching after a strange lady, Ying Caihong, embarks on a search for the ancient tomb of a Mongolian princess.

The two later found out that Ying only wants to take possession of the famed artifact known as the Equinox Flower, which is believed to have the power to bring the dead back to life. 

The film premiered on December 18. But before its release, movie speculators already predicted that it will reach amazing heights. On its opening day alone, Mojin: The Lost Legend grossed $26.4 million. It has set a record as the highest earning local 3D title on a single-day gross for a local 3D title.

Only Star Wars: The Force Awakens trampled it to the second spot in the global box office. The film opened in 22 theatres in the United States and Canada with US$280,000.
