Despite the record-low temperature enveloping mainland China, a fire still managed to break out early Sunday morning. A residential bungalow in Chaoyang District, Eastern Beijing caught fire, the fire department told local media. Firefighters responded to the scene after panicked calls from neighbors at around 3:24 am.

The fire was put out after an hour, but it still left at least eight people dead and five people seriously injured. The house, a masonry concrete structure, was reportedly built by local villagers. 

The cause of the fire and the estimated amount of damaged property are still unknown.

Preliminary investigation is still ongoing.
