Germany vowed to supply the Kurdish military forces with weapons to battle Sunni insurgents in northern Iraq, German Chancellor Angela Merkel announced on Wednesday.
According to some reports, Germany’s postwar arms retraction emulates the disapproval of the European nations towards the cruel actions of Islamist militants in Iraq.

Frank-Walter Steinmeier, the foreign minister of Germany, told reporters in Berlin that the government is determined to halt the violence in northern Iraq and cease further threats that it could pose to the region and Europe.
Humanitarian aid for the Kurdish forces is not enough. The government will provide further military equipment aid, including arms and ammunition, to Iraq's military personnel as soon as possible, the German foreign minister added.
After Sunnie insurgents released a video showing the beheading of kidnapped U.S. journalist James Foley, the deliberation of European countries hastily pushed through due to intense domestic and international pressure.
Some sources said France, Britain, Italy and other European nations expressed their desire to also deliver weapons to Iraqi troops to fight the IS militants. Germany will closely coordinate with these countries to implement the military aid in the troubled region in Iraq.
Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said some officials are reviewing the weapon type and amount of artillery equipment they will send to Kurds.
Based on some reports, Kurdish authorities have already submitted a weapon list needed for a sustainable defense against the militants to the international community.
The anti-tank weapons of Germany’s military could probably contribute to Kurdish security forces, German ministry spokesman Jens Flosdorff told the reporters.
Meanwhile, the French government started shipping weapons to Kurdish forces and they also supplied similar artillery to Western-backed Syrian opposition forces.
