U.S. Senator John McCain on Wednesday called on President Barack Obama to dramatically increase airstrikes targeting the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS).

According to the Republican senator, the Islamic State's beheading of American journalist James Foley by ISIS should serve as a turning point for the Obama administration in dealing with the group.

U.S. forces launched a secret mission to rescue American hostages including the journalist but they were unable to find the hostages and instead exchanged fire with Islamic militants.

The U.S. government depended on the intel they had and was confident that they had sufficient knowledge on the status of the hostages. However, the mission failed and ended with Foley's death.

The U.S. National Security Council said the video released by the Islamic state showing the beheading of Foley was authentic.

President Barack Obama said the murder of the American journalist appalled the entire world. British Prime Minister David Cameron described the killing as "brutal and barbaric" and "an act of murder."

In a telephone interview, McCain said that the first thing to do is to dramatically increase airstrikes that will extend to Syria.

Foley's horrible beheading had a direct impact to American citizens and even to the people around the world. The act reflected the sheer brutality the terrorist group and the wide range of crimes they are capable of committing.

McCain also explained that it is necessary to extne the  airstrikes to Syria because the militants there captured military equipment from the Iraqi city of Mosul and moved those into to Syria.

McCain also firmly declared that the terrorist group should not only be stopped but should be defeated.

The senator proposes that the United States government should provide arms for Iraqi Kurds and help broker a reconciliation between Shiítes and Sunnis in Iraq region.
