Wanda Partners With Dolby to Open 100 Cinemas Across China in 5 Years

Over the next five years, Wanda Cinema Line, the biggest theater chain in China, has announced that it will be opening 100 new cinemas equipped with Dolby Cinema's projection and sound system. 

In an official statement from Shenzhen Stock Exchange on Wednesday, Wanda revealed that its first cinema is set to roll up its curtains by the end of March. It will reportedly sport Dolby Vision projection system and the Dolby Atmos sound technology. The profit generated from the venture will be shared by the two establishments.

Other than China, the two companies are reported to also be in talks about a partnering with Hoyts, an Australian cinema chain acquired by Wanda in June last year. The deal comes as major investors are coming into the industry as China is set to surpass the USA soon as the biggest film market. 

Meanwhile, has IMAX began putting up big screens in a number of shopping mall cinemas in the country, including those owned by Wanda. 

RealID, 3D projection technology owner, also has plans of expanding in the country and is said to be partnering with Broadway Cinema Chain. 

Dolby Cinema features the Dolby Vision projection system that utilizes optics and image processing to produce high dynamic range as well as developed color technology and contrast ratio striking vivid and realistic images. This technology promises viewers a richer and more detailed experience compared with others on the market. Dolby also boasts of Dolby Atmos that can resound audio around the theater, and even overhead. The combination of the two promises audiences not only a whole new level of experience, but also a closer feeling to the onscreen action.

Wanda Cinema Line is owned by Dalian Wanda Group and headed by Wang Jianlin. As of December last year, the company had approximately 2,000 screens. Wanda was the biggest cinema chain in terms of box office gross in 2015, raking in up to $912 million, that is more than 13 percent of the market profit.
