Statistics Show Less Visitors are Staying in Macau Hotels

The number of people staying in Macau hotels significantly decreased last year, according to the Statistics and Census Service.

There were 106 hotels and guesthouses operating by the end of December 2015, which include five 5-star hotels and three 4-star hotels.
More than one million guests checked into hotels and guesthouse in December 2015 - representing an increase by up to 19 percent year-on-year. Visitors from mainland China increased by 10.4 percent, while those from Hong Kong and Taiwan grew by 56 percent and 47 percent, respectively.
The average occupancy rate in all Macau hotel categories last year stood at 82.8 percent - representing a 2.3 percent year-on-year drop. Five-star hotels had the most occupants with 82.2 percent, but it was still down by 5.3 percent from 2014.
Four-star hotels had the deepest plunge with an 8.6 percent year-on-year decline to 79.2 percent. In December, hotels and guesthouses were down to 82.2 percent, showing a 2.3 percent cut year-on-year.
On the upside, guests' average length of stay last year increased by 0.1 of a night to 1.5 nights. Overnight visitors posted a 0.1 percent increase year-on-year to 68.9 percent
The number of guests who checked into 5-star hotels rose by 2,200 and while 4-star hotels had 2,100 more guests.
Five-star rooms account for 21,000 (66 percent) of the 32,000 hotel rooms registered in the city.
