Doctors in Nagpur, India recently found out that 62-year old Jyoti Kumar has been carrying around her baby's skeletal remains in her belly for 38 years.

Kumar had an ectopic pregnancy when she was 24.

An ectopic pregnancy occurs when a fertilized egg is implanted outside the uterus. Although she was informed the baby was going to die, fetuses from ectopic pregnancies have been known to continue to grow and develop for some time.

During the time of her pregnancy, Kumar was informed by doctors she would have to remove the fetus via surgery. The woman, however, was frightened to have the procedure done, so she instead left the hospital and opted not to have the fetus removed.

Kumar suffered abdominal pain from the pregnancy so she sought aid at a small clinic.

Several decades later, Kumar's abdominal pain flared up again. She was suffering from pain for over two months.

This time, the pain was a lot more unbearable so she allowed doctors at the KP Salve Institute of Medical Sciences in central India to remove the skeletal remains of the fetus. Doctors found that the fetus had turned into a calcified sac.

Her doctors said they thought they found a lump on the lower right side of her abdomen and believed it was cancer. They were shocked to find the mummified fetus, which they only confirmed to be a child's skeletal remains after an MRI.

The mass was discovered between Kumar's uterus, bladder and intestines, causing her to experience abdominal pain, urinary difficulty and fever. The fetus' remains were weighing heavily on her urinary system and compromised the functioning of her kidneys.

Physicians believe the baby's amniotic fluid and soft tissues were more likely broken down and reabsorbed by the body after it died.

Kumar's ectopic pregnancy is believed to the longest to date.

Before Kumar's case, a Belgian woman had a mummified fetus removed after it died in her body 18 years ago.
