6.5 Magnitute Earthquake Hits Taiwan

Taiwan has been hit by a powerful earthquake early Saturday. The earthquake struck the city of Tainan, bringing down at least two buildings and leaving other structures leaning dangerously.
According to the Los Angeles Times, the U.S. Geological Survey recorded a powerful tremor of 6.4 magnitude early on Saturday morning, following initial reports of a 6.7 magnitude earthquake. Geophysicist Paul Caruso said the earthquake was very shallow, about six miles underground, and the epicentre was on the island. The tremors were felt as far as mainland China.

There were no immediate reports of death or serious injuriesfrom the earthquake. Reports say that the earthquake caused a 17-storey building to collapse. Rescue crews had so far rescued 123 people from the wreckage, according to a fire brigade official.
City government fire service spokesman Lee Po Min said that an estimated 60 household in the building with around 240 people possibly living in the facility.
Four buildings have collapsed in Tainan City area. Search and rescue are still underway. As of this time, there are no reported casualties said Lin Kuang-cheng, a spokesman for the national fire agency. Around 30 people were reportedly rescued from the four buildings that had collapsed.
China Post reported that city government has set up a level one emergency response centre. They are urging onlookers not to block access to emergency crews moving around the area.
The city of Kaohsiung was also affected. Although the earthquake was a shallow one, there has been no indication of a tsunami so far according to authorities.
The earthquake reportedly struck Taiwan before 4 a.m. local time in Taiwan.
