(Photo : Reuters) Intel is improving its processor manufacturing technology.
Chipmaker Intel has been urging motherboard manufacturers to remove overclocking capabilities on their product using its its non-K Skylake processors. It appears that the pressure from the chipmaker is slowly starting to creep in. In a recent BIOS Update released on Feb. 4, motherboard manufacturer ASRock removed the SKY OC feature on its motherboards.

A handful of motherboard manufacturers have been offering overclocking capabilities on their products with non-K Skylake processors since late in December 2015. These motherboard manufacturers include ASRock, ASUS, Biostar, Gigabyte and MSI.
Of the aforementioned motherboard manufacturers, ASRock was the most aggressive in promoting its overclocking capabilities and even peddled it under a new brand called HyperOC.
Overclocking some non-K Skylake processors appeared to be a huge success. In some benchmark tests, the Core i3-6100 processor posted a more impressive result in Cinebench compared to the Core i5-4430, this is in spite of the fact that all the four cores of the latter were being stressed to 100 percent.
In some benchmark tests, enthusiasts reported that an overclocked Core i3-6100 can even outperform some of the most powerful Core i5 processors.
In some gaming tests, the i3 performs almost on par with the i5. The most obvious difference between the two is the price range. The i3 costs significantly cheaper compared to the i5.
According to Tech Worm, Intel is pushing this in order to sell the K-series of processors. Some experts also said that Intel might be worried that overclocking non-K processors might result in faster degradation of the chips. The effect of prolonged overclocking range from temperature detection failure to instruction set failure.
Recent reports claim that Intel is planning to release a new BIOS update that will stop all motherboards from being able to overclock non-K processors. Some experts say this in one of the updates released by the company in order to fix a bug with Prime95.
