Women Who Read Fifty Shades of Grey Likely to Have More Sex

Researchers have found that young adult women who read "Fifty Shades of Grey" are more likely to have multiple sex partners, eating disorders, drinking problems and verbally abusive lovers.
These are the risks associated with being in an abusive relationship, much like what happened to the lead character Anastasia from the book, said Amy Bonomi, one of the researchers.

She explained that reading Fifty Shades might potentially aggravate adverse health behaviors like eating disorders for people who have these disorders.
If they read the book before experiencing the health behaviors, it's possible that the book influenced the onset of these behaviors, she added.
Researchers found out that women who read all three books were 65 percent more likely to drink five or more drinks in a single occasion.
They also explained that 63 percent women who read the series were more likely to have five or more intercourse partners during their lifetime.
Researchers believe their study is one of the first to investigate the relationship between fiction depicting violence against women and its probable effect on their behavior.
Bonomi clarified the study doesn't aim to ban Fifty Shades of Grey in bookstores, ask women to boycott the book and not have a love life.
She believes it's important that women understand the behavior portrayed in the book spring from violent relationships.
Bonomi explained they recognize the depiction of violence against women itself, especially if the depiction attempts to shed serious light on the problem.
"The problem comes when the depiction reinforces the acceptance of the status quo, rather than challenging it," she added.
She also encourages parents and educators to engage their kids in constructive conversation about sexuality, body image and gender role expectations as early as grade school.
The Fifty Shades series sold more than 100 million copies worldwide. A movie is scheduled for release in 2015.
