Retired undefeated American professional boxing champion Floyd "Money'"Mayweather Jr. has been voted the 2015 Sugar Ray Robinson Fighter of the Year, the Boxing Writers Association of America announced on Friday.

With the ballot results announced, it will be the third time the former world boxing champion will receive the prestigious annual award. Mayweather also won the award in 2007 and 2013.

According to ESPN, the longtime pound for pound king won the award on the strength of his 48th fight, the unanimous decision win against his perennial rival, the Filipino boxing icon, Manny Pacquiao, who himself is a three-time BWAA fighter of the year awardee (2006, 2008 and 2009).

Boxing greats Muhammad Ali, Sugar Ray Leonard, Jo Frazier and Evander Holyfield are the other well known boxers to win the award three times.

Mayweather faced Pacquiao on May 2, 2015 in Las Vegas, Nevada in what is believed to be the richest fight in the history of boxing. The American boxer got the better of the Filipino pugilist winning via unanimous decision 118-110, 116-112, and 116-112.

The Forbes world's highest-paid athlete and the five-division world champion Mayweather (49-0, 26 KO's) easily defeated former welterweight champion Andre Berto via a unanimous decision last September. It was then that the undefeated American boxer announced his retirement from the sport.

There have been rumors about a possible rematch with Pacquiao, however, Mayweather was quick to deny the claims.

Mayweather has matched the long standing record of the boxing great Rocky Marciano of 49 undefeated bouts.

Many are clamoring for the unbeaten boxer to fight again at least more time; one more victory would mean setting a new boxing record.
