As the search and rescue operation continues, the death toll from the powerful earthquake that struck Taiwan on Saturday has increased to 40, with more than 100 people still unaccounted for.
The 6.4 magnitude earthquake hit the Kaohsiun country early morning on February 6. Officials say more than 200 individuals have already been successfully pulled out from the rubble of the Wei Guan high-rise residential building. Of these, 38 people, who were rushed to the nearest medical facility, were dead upon arrival.

Meanwhile, at the 16-storey building, three signs of life have been detected, which the rescuers are currently concentrating on, according to Tainan mayor William Lai.
Rescuers have admitted that there are slim chances of finding more survivors given the fact that 72 hours have already passed. They are starting to consider using heavy equipment to hasten the clearing process.
Rescuers were also able to pull out two survivors, an 8-year-old girl and her aunt more than 60 hours after the disaster from the fifth floor of the toppled building on Monday.
Taiwan's President-elect Tsai Ing-wen said there is a need to assess old buildings to ensure they can withstand unforeseen disasters such as earthquakes. "There needs to be a continued strengthening of their ability to deal with disasters," she said.
Outgoing President Ma Ying-jeou also emphasized the need for the government to inspect the quality of all buildings. In a statement, he said "We will have some further improvements. We will definitely do this work well."
Chinese President Xi Jinping conveyed his sympathy and condolences to the victims and reiterated Beijing's offer to send aid, according to state news agency Xinhua on Sunday.
