China is not quite acquainted with American football, explaining why many Chinese cannot totally relate to the game. To make an association, Sohu.com simplified it as "Super Bowl, a US Lunar New Year Gala."
The NFL championship show was shown on Sunday, the same day Chinese welcomed the Lunar New Year's Eve, with predominant state television broadcaster CCTV airing its annual gala show.

Similar to CCTV's spring festival gala show, Super Bowl is also celebrated across the US with spectators from around the world. Singers and dancers showcase performances that shoot TV viewing rate high.
On Tuesday, CCTV statistics reveal that the gala show this year had approximately 690 million TV viewers. Meanwhile, more than 1 billion other people watched it via the Internet. The Super Bowl, on the other hand, drew nearly 112 million viewers, according to viewership measurement company Nielsen. The Super Bowl landed on the third spot as the most viewed show in the history of US television.
Duing the Super Bowl, famous stars graced the Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, California, including Beyonce, Coldplay and Bruno Mars. Lady Gaga also appeared to sing the American national anthem.
Meanwhile, China's New Year's Gala was also star-studded with various other performances including Chinese Kung Fu exhibitions, magic shows, comedy sketches and the much talked about 540 synchronized dancing robots that performed with singer Sun Nan. The show was broadcast live in four various sub-venues, with Beijing as the main venue.
