An unusual advertisement has been placed in one of Beijing's busiest subway stations with the words: "Dear father and mother, don't worry. The world is so big. There are so many different ways of life. Singletons can also be happy."

This advertisement is reported to be the work of a group of young people frustrated by the constant pressure from their elder family members to get married. This custom is known as "bihun" in Putonghua, according to Xinhua.

The controversial advertisement was propped up at Dongzhimen Station. At the bottom of the ad is a suggestion to spread positivity on being single.

The pressure usually peaks during Lunar New Year as relatives gather from across the mainland and other parts of the world for a week of eating and celebration. For many single people, this can be a horrible time.

Since he was 25, Han Degan, now 33 years old, has been urged by his parents to get married. Degan is one of the many founders of the group.

He narrated to Xinhua that when he was in high school, his parents did not want him to fall in love. However, they suddenly seemed eager to marry him off when he graduated from the university.

When he met other single individuals who had the same views as him, they formed a small alliance composed of about 10 members. The advertisement placed at Dongzhimen Station hopes to bring attention their cause.

Their first concept for the advertisement featured a young woman with her hands crossed above her head, seemingly in a gesture of denial. The words "bihun" was crossed out on the woman's shirt. However, the concept was rejected by the advertising company and government officials.

The group is paying around 38,000 Yuan for the ad space.
