It Ended Even Before It Began: NBC Cancels 'Emerald City'

Even before the pilot episode for "Emerald City" can be shot, NBC decided to cancel the show.

A number of San Diego Comic Con attendees noticed that NBC didn't release a lot of promos for the new show "Emerald City". The show, a modern take on the classic "Wizard of Oz" story, was almost non-existent in the arena where it was best to promote it, making people feel that it didn't seem like production for the show was going to push through.

"Emerald City" was going to be a dark re-imaging of Oz, with kingdoms in turmoil and warriors fight for power, almost in the same vein as "Game of Thrones". Instead of a young girl in her teens, Dorothy Gale is a 20-year old headstrong character who is forced to be part of a bloody war for the kingdom of Oz.

NBC pulled the plug on the show, taking promotions off the air. Reportedly, NBC and "Emerald City" show runner and executive producer, Josh Friedman, could not reconcile their creative differences.

The project is the brain child of executive producers Friedman and Matthew Arnold. The two originally wrote the script for the new show and Friedman did rewrites for the pilot.

Friedman is a producer and writer famed for "War of the Worlds" and "The Black Dahlia", while Arnold is known for his work in NBC's TV series, "Siberia"

It's a shame especially since NBC had already ordered a 10-episode straight-to-series format for the show last spring.

However, despite NBC withdrawing support for the show, Universal Television is still very much interested in producing it. It's only a matter of which network to bring it to.

Recently, Fox also decided to drop its supposed series, "Hieroglyph," an action series set during ancient Egyptian times. The show had already finished doing a pilot when it was cancelled.
