Cal Poly Football Players Charged with 23 Felonies

Five football players from California Polytechnic State University have been arrested in connection with an armed robbery attempt at the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity house, last August 10.

A total of 23 felonies were charged to players Cameron Akins, Dominique Love, Cortland Fort, Kristaan Ivory, and Jake Brito.

According to the San Luis Obispo Tribune, the felonies charged include, "conspiracy to commit residential robbery, attempted residential robbery, attempted burglary, and false imprisonment, as well as several enhancements for using a firearm during a crime."

They also stated that Akins was charged with three additional charges due to attempting to resist his arrest.

The police recounted that when they came to the scene at around 2:30 in the morning, Akins was antagonizing a member of the fraternity with his gun. Upon seeing the police, he ran away until the officers caught him, to which he responded by biting his detainer.

San Luis Obispo Chief Steve said that a witness to the crime mentioned a possible connection to Xanax.

Last November, a former Cal Poly football player was hospitalized due to a drug deal gone wrong.

Geoffrey Hyde, an all-conference center for four years, was found with a gunshot wound on his back. Hyde was rumored to have been participating in a transaction also for the prescription drug, Xanax.

These recent activities have forced Cal Poly to improve their drug testing on their athletes.

Over the past year, they have only been allotted US $2000 to test their athletes. They reported that they were only able to test 41 athletes out of all 540.

Don Oberhelman, university athletic director, said that they will be moving forward with a better drug testing program, despite the costs.

The advancement of the program will be built on more frequent testing for student athletes, as well as better tests that will be able to be identified.
