Rapper-businessman Suge Knight underwent emergency surgery at a Los Angeles hospital Sunday after being shot multiple times at a pre-VMA party hosted by Chris Brown.

The Death Row Records co-founder has been declared in stable condition and is recovering at the Intensive Care Unit of the Cedars-Sinai Hospital in LA.

Initial reports said Knight sustained six gunshot wounds in the stomach, arms and other parts of his body but was able to walk into a police car where he waited for an ambulance to take him to hospital.

Two other people were injured along with Knight, one of them critically.

Witnesses who were at the star-studded party on West Hollywood's 10AK club reported hearing multiple gunshots fired around 1:30 a.m. local time on Sunday.

They said the shots were apparently aimed at R&B singer Chris Brown, who was hosting the pre-Video Music Awards party with singer Pia Mia in celebration of his upcoming sixth studio album, X. 

Brown, a nominee for one VMA award this year, was unhurt and was escorted by his entourage out of the club into his sports car.

Prior to the shooting, rapper Jayceon Terrel Taylor, more popularly known as The Game, figured in a fight with club security guards, which reportedly led to his being denied entry to Chris Brown's party.

There was no evidence, however, linking The Game and his friends to the shooting incident that immediately followed their altercation with club guards.

The Daily Mail earlier reported that a suspected gunman was apprehended after police searched the club, but the police later denied this, saying a hunt for the suspect was still underway.

They had sealed off the area around the 10AK club and stood guard with their guns drawn until after every guest had left the party.

Party host Chris Brown has yet to issue a formal statement about the shooting incident but tweeted his disappointment about not being able to enjoy and have fun without it getting ugly at some point.
