In a developing story, PlayStation Network has shut down early Sunday morning due to a possible glitch in the system bringing inaccurate traffic readings. PlayStation states, like other major networks around the world, the PlayStation Network and Sony Entertainment Network have been impacted by an attempt to overwhelm our network with artificially high traffic.

Although this system crash has affected the ability to access Sony's network, they assure that no personal information has been accessed or compromised, as has happened recently. Sony also regrets any "inconvenience they may have caused".
A hacker group referred to as the Lizard Squad has been claiming responsibility for the network crash, according to their recent subliminal Tweets - relishing in the crash of the network early Sunday. We can't say for sure if these claims are in fact true until Sony releases a definite reason for the PSN being down.
Sony has a scheduled maintenance coming up soon for PSN on August 25th, but the network suddenly has gone down for plenty of people. Not only that but many Sony sites do not work as well; some speculate that someone or some group tampering with Sony's network could be the 'only' cause of this. Others say it could be due to a very minor hiccup in the system, but many users are slightly worried that the PSN service seems to be inoperable worldwide.
Sony is vigorously working to fix the issues as soon as possible. However, at this time Sony is not aware of the exact issue and is only in the system diagnosis stage of determining where the problem lies, then the task of repairing the system comes.
As Sony works to mend the network, they have stated that at this time there is no time frame on exactly when the system and service will resume as usual.
