Brazil Claims 10th World Grand Prix Title

Back-to-back Olympic gold medalists Brazil completely dominated Japan 25-15, 25-18, 27-25 and claimed its 10th FIVB World Grand Prix title in Tokyo on Sunday.

The tall Brazilians were clearly no match for the much smaller and inexperienced Japanese team as the defending champions blocked consistently over the net, taking the first two sets by storm.

Japan defended well in the third set as libero Yuko Sano made receptions that setter Hitomi Nakamichi converted into plays. With Japan on the verge of a comeback, Brazil found a chink in their opponent's defense, as Blassioli Castro De Paula snuck in the final two points to win the title.

Brazil coach Jose Roberto Guimares praised Japan for their performance under coach Masayoshi Mayabe.

"Their new system worked very well ... They beat Turkey, Belgium, Russia and China," he said.

"We see Japan as a model team with good team plays and individuals with good techniques," Guimares added.

Castro De Paula was top scorer for Brazil with 16 points and the team connected with a total of 10 block points while Yuki Ishi produced 10 points to top the Japanese nationals.

On the other hand, Sano was named the Most Valuable Player of the league and became the first ever Japanese to win the MVP trophy in the tournament.

Japan also claimed its first medal in the event since it started in 1993.

China had a heart-breaking loss against Russia in the bronze medal match. After winning the first two sets of the match, the Chinese just couldn't close out the Russians, losing the succeeding sets, 25-21, 25-14, 22-25, 20-25, 13-15.

Tatiana Kosheleva scored an amazing 28 points to top Russia's bronze winning performance while Xiaotong Liu led China with 19 points.
