California declared a state of emergency just a few hours after a powerful earthquake struck the southern part of Napa, California at 3:20 a.m. local time. The earthquake resulted to huge property damage, gas leaks, fire, and power outages in scores of homes.
The epicenter of the 6.0-magnitude earthquake was determined to be six miles southwest of Napa, which incurred the greatest damage, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Several aftershocks followed. The agency warned that around 30 to 70 more are likely to take place over the week.
Governor Jerry Brown's declaration aims to direct state resources to aid Napa's recovery and respond to the needs and calls of the locals.
According to reports, many homes, business establishments, and wineries were damaged, if not deemed completely uninhabitable.
As for injuries, around 120 people sustained minor cuts and lacerations, Queen of the Valley Medical Center said. Three are currently in critical condition, including a child hit by a falling fireplace.
The hospital set up tents to respond to the influx of injured people.
In addition, many parts of the city had no power and several people reported the smell of natural gas at residential areas.
Fire was also reported. But since about 600 homes had no water, firefighters had difficulty responding. A total of six structures were damaged by the fire, while four of them were completely damaged, Napa Valley Fire Department's John Callanan said.
"Our resources are exhausted as far as quantity of on-duty personnel," he added.
He said that support personnel is also being stretched to answer to reports of gas leaks and power outage, search for people who could be trapped in their own homes, and transport injured people to medical centers.
Meanwhile, President Barack Obama was informed about the earthquake and Napa's condition, the White House reported.
Federal officials are also in touch with the local government and emergency responders.
