(Photo : Reuters) Didi's profitability in China is increasing. The company is now looking to invest in its technology.
Chinese taxi-hailing app Didi revealed on Monday that its January transactions reached a record-breaking high, surpassing those of all companies providing a similar service in the United States and Canada combined.
In January, the gross merchandise value of the Chinese transportation service spiked to up to $800 million, which is $200 million higher than the amount generated in the same period by the same services in Canada and the United States.

The upswing was due to the expansion of the Didi's ride-on-demand service to over 200 lower-tier cities across the mainland. The company kicked off the project in December to maintain its dominance in the fierce competition with rivals like Uber and CAR.
Didi's robust entry to lower-tier cities attracted an additional 10 million users in January. The company also managed to generate revenue in half of the over 400 cities it is currently operating in.
Meanwhile, the California-based company Uber, which is currently operating in more than 40 Chinese cities, has announced its target to penetrate 100 cities in China by the end of this year. Last month, the company reported losing more than $1 billion per year in China as its competition with Didi and other cab-hailing app heats up.
A Uber spokesperson revealed that its strong profits from other nations are supporting its international expansion and stressed that the firm has the financial strength to win China in the long run.
