India Bans Movie For ‘Glorifying’ PM Indira Gandhi’s Killers

After triggering protests prior to its release on August 22, theaters in India are prohibited to show "Kaum De Heere" (or Diamonds of the Community), a movie that allegedly 'glorified' Indira Gandhi's assassins.

The plot of the movie revolves around Satwant Singh and Beant Singh, the former Indian Prime Minister's bodyguards, who later killed her in 1984.

Known as Operation Blue Star, she reportedly sent troops to pursue militants in the Golden Temple, which was considered as Sikhism's holiest shrine. The movie portrayed PM Gandhi's assassination as an act of vengeance after thousands have died during the raid at the Sikh holy shrine.

Following her death, Beant Singh was killed during an encounter with the police while Satwant Singh lived through conviction and was later hanged in 1987. Both of them were said to belong to the Sikh minority religion.

"We saw the film and decided it could not be released ... due to fears that it would lead to disruption of public order," India's Central Board of Film Classification head Leela Samson stated.

She later dubbed the film as 'double trouble' because it allegedly glorified both the assassins and their deaths.

In Punjab, the Indian National Congress, Indira Gandhi's party, threatened to execute protests if the film was shown in the country. Its youth sector also appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi to prohibit the showing of the film in the country, citing that the assassins were presented as heroes in the movie.

Aside from the Congress Party, the Bharatiya Janata Party also expressed its support for the decision to prohibit the showing of the film.

Meanwhile, the film's producer, Ravinder Ravi is yet to comment on the said ban though he had spoken in defense of the film's storyline.

"Films have been made about political assassinations all over the world, so why can't a film be made on Mrs. Gandhi's assassination?" he told BBC News.
