The New York Yankees have retired Joe Torre's jersey number "6" in a pregame ceremony last August 23.

Torre started as the manager of the Yankees in 1996. Prior to that, he had lead three teams - the New York Mets, Atlanta Braves, and St. Louis Cardinals, - resulting with a record of 894-1,003 and only one division title.

The Yankees, at the time, had been in a title slump as they had not won a World Series championship since1978.

When Torre came in, he led the team to four championships in five years. He was also given credit for being able to make the playoffs every season for 12 years.

He left the Yankees with a 1,173-657 record, and six pennants apart from the World Series rings.

Afterwards, he went on to manage the Los Angeles Dodgers for three years, winning a couple of division titles.

His number has been retired along 16 other Yankee greats including Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and Torre's good friend, Yogi Berra.

With the retiring of Torre's "6," and the eventual retiring of Jeter's "2," the Yankees will have no single-digit numbers available for jerseys anymore.

During the ceremony, he was joined by his wife and good friend Berra. He was also joined by some of the old players he managed like David Cone, who had pitched a great game to keep the Yankees alive during the 1996 World Series.

Other players were also present like Jorge Posadas, Bernie Williams, Andy Pettite, and Paul O'Neill.

New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio issued a proclamation stating that declared it Joe Torre day.

In addition to having his number retired, a plaque dedicated to Torre's achievements was also presented. It is going to be placed into Monument Park.

Torre would receive replicas of the plaque and his number, and a gold and diamond ring to commemorate the memorable day.
