Scientists believe this new space lab will prevent influence of cosmic rays, providing a clean space for a number of physical and cosmological experiments - including experiments on dark matters.

According to Liu Weiping, head of the research facility, researchers are hoping to use the facility to explore the birth of heavy elements by measuring neutron source reactions.

Jinping Underground Laboratory became operational in December 2010. The depth of the laboratory is 2,400 meters. Experts consider Jinping Laboratory as one of the best underground space laboratories in the world. Construction work to add another underground space to the laboratory began in 2014.

In recent years, China has been investing heavily in the area of space research and technology. Many experts state that China's space program not only aims at making the country technologically self sufficient, but also enhance its image as a 'rising power.'

China successfully landed a land rover on the moon in 2013. By 2020 it aims to build a manned space station and is also planning to send a crewed expedition to moon.

China is currently constructing a 500 meter telescope in Guizhou province. The world's largest telescope is set to be operational by September this year. The telescope would help Chinese scientist to detect signs of extraterrestrial life in our universe.
