Her boyfriend, Liu Fenghe (then 23-year-old), of Dalian, Liaoning Province, vowed to take care of her for the rest of his life. When reporters asked him about the cause of his girlfriend's head injury, he was reluctant to answer. Doctors were led to believe that Lin's injured her head after falling from at least five storeys high.
Liu has reportedly spent more than 200,000 yuan on Lin's medical care. He said that even though he would push Lin in a wheelchair for the rest of their lives, he would be happy.
Liu's was considered heroic, and he was portrayed by the media as loving, selfless man.
When Lin's awakened eight months later, however, she revealed the cause of her coma - turning the loving narrative on its head.
Lin told her family that she was badly hurt by Liu on the day that she went into a coma, according to People's Daily Online-affiliated Huanqiu. It turns out that she had burnt 20 loaves of bread for the baking business that they were running together.
Liu, in a fit of anger, took a rolling pin and bashed Lin on the head. Lin said that she remembers falling on the floor and Liu calling for an ambulance.
She added that this was not the first time that her boyfriend has been violent towards her.
Authorities are now investigating Lin's claims against Liu.
