Moment in Chongqing: cultural tourism in China’s auxiliary capital (1)

Chongqing, is a city with legendary stories. It is a major city in Southwest China and one of the five national central cities in China. During the Second Sino-Japanese War, Chongqing became Generalissimo Chiang Kai-shek's provisional capital. More than 50 embassies moved to Chongqing with the government at that time. By now, some of the historic relics are still well protected. Let open the dust-laden memory and experience a nostalgic trip in Chongqing.

1. Chongqing People's Liberation Monument
Chongqing People's Liberation Monument was built in 1945 to commemorate the victory over the Japanese in WWII. It is in a large pedestrian shopping plaza, which is in the Yuzhong District that is regarded as the commercial center and financial center of Chongqing. There are a lot of stores, bookstores, theaters, hotels and office buildings around it.
2. General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum
The General Joseph W. Stilwell Museum is located in the Yuzhong District of Chongqing. Located in Stilwell's former residence and headquarters, the museum comprises a three-storied house furnished in 1940s style. In the courtyard there is an engraving of a speech by American President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Chongqing Municipal Government converted the building into a museum in 1991.
In 1942, during the WWII, General Joseph W. Stilwell acted under orders to come to Chongqing. He worked as Chief of Staff in the China Theater of Operations and as the Commander-in-Chief of the American Army in the China Burma India Theater (CBI).
3. Former Residence of Soong Ching-ling Exhibition Hall
The exhibition hall is located at No.5 Xin Village in Yuzhong District of Chongqing. Soong Ching-ling was the second wife of Sun Yat-sen, leader of the 1911 revolution that established the Republic of China. She was a member of the Soong family, and together with her brothers and sisters played a prominent role in China's politics prior to 1949. After the establishment of the People's Republic of China in 1949, she held several prominent positions in the new government, and traveled abroad during the early 1950s, representing China at a number of international activities.
