Despite being written off by critics, a 'Terminator: Genisys' sequel is still very much possible. Indeed, there are enough reasons to believe that the film, which got a 26 percent rating from Rotten Tomatoes, will, in all likelihood, see the light of day.

And why not? The movie, which featured 'Games of Thrones' star Emilia Clarke as the iconic rebel fighter Sarah Connor, grossed $440 million in box office receipts.

In fact, the film is considered the second highest grossing film of the 'Terminator' franchise.

With this impressive haul - $350 million of which came from international markets - it would be inaccurate to label the movie as a complete commercial failure.

It therefore came as a surprise to many when Paramount announced last month that it had pulled the 'Terminator: Genisys' sequel from its release schedule.

Skydance COO Dana Goldberg announced that the company was in the process of "re-adjusting" plans for future sequels.

Although the film did not quite meet the studio's expectations in terms of projected domestic earnings, it nonetheless proved that the widely popular sci-fi franchise still had a huge worldwide following.

However, it seems that the benchmark for a 'Terminator: Genisys' sequel is been the original 'Terminator' movie, which maintained supremacy in the U.S. box office for two straight weeks.

Its sequel, T2: Judgment Day' likewise became a major blockbuster hit after earning $519 million, while being hailed by industry critics as one of the best action movies of all time.

The question therefore is not whether there will be a 'Terminator: Genisys' sequel but rather when will the sequel exactly happen?

There are two possible answers.

First, it would largely depend on whether the franchise will be sold to a different studio which is bent on breathing life into the once lucrative "humans vs alien robots" series.

And second, whether Skydance looks at the bigger picture and considers the movie's international haul as a source of inspiration to overcome problems that held back Genisys from being accepted by American audiences and film critics alike.

Either option would be good news for fans who are keeping their fingers crossed that a 'Terminator: Genisys' sequel will begin production soon.
