Amazon Is Putting Together A Team To Work On Virtual Reality

(Photo : Reuters) Amazon has banned the sale of substandard Type-C USB products on its e-commerce platform.

Based on a latest job listing posted on GlassDoor, it appears that e-commerce giant Amazon is also dipping its toes in the virtual reality platform. Rumors indicate that Amazon is putting together a team that will work on a 3D virtual reality platform.

According to the GlassDoor job listing, Amazon Video is looking for a senior software development manager for virtual reality, and it appears that Amazon is looking for more than one employee.

The GlassDoor job posting describes the position, "The Virtual Reality team will explore and create the platform and interface for immersive storytelling. This will include an ingestion and playback platform for Virtual Reality experiences."

The second part of that job description led many analysts to believe that Amazon is planning to create a platform that is similar to Milk VR. Amazon competitors like Netflix and Hulu have already launched their own virtual reality services and it only makes sense that Amazon should create a service that offers a 360-degree video format as well.

Last fall, Hulu announced that it is planning to create original virtual reality content. On the other hand, Netflix had already released a virtual reality movie theater app for the Samsung Gear VR device.

Amazon had been very busy recently in both Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality platforms. The company recently released several patent designs for an Augmented Reality device. Additionally, Amazon also launched Lumberyard, a newly developed game engine that readily supports virtual reality.

Although Amazon's entry into the virtual reality platform spells a lot of promise, it is important to note that Amazon Prime Instant video is still unavailable in North America, aside from the United States.

Amazon's foray into the virtual reality platform simply highlights how critical the platform is on the future of the tech industry. Market analysts estimate that the virtual reality and augmented reality platforms are poised to become a $150 billion market by 2020.
